Welcome
to
The Cree Group

The Cree Group is an online location where Cree language learners and speakers can meet and practice speaking the Cree language.

We are currently busy working on different Cree language projects with community and of course everyone else.

About

The Cree Group has been meeting online for almost three years now, this group came about from my past Cree language learner students asking ‘Where can I practice to speak Cree?’ Having access to fluent Cree language speakers is sometimes hard so this is why I created this online option for speaking practice for those that are interested in speaking with fluent speakers and other Cree language learners.

The current speaking practice group offered at this time is for intermediate and advanced Cree language learners. This is not a class. This is a Cree language meetup where we meet and have Cree conversations about many different topics.

Member Testimonials

“mistahi ninanâskomon (I am extraordinarily grateful) for the Cree group. I have been practicing Cree for over two years now and so often I feel stuck and I just can't get the words out when I'm in classes where we focus on learning numbers and animals. Cree group offers an Indigenous way of learning: through story and conversation. In that way, we not only learn the language but we learn how to relate to one another in a nêhiyaw worldview. This group has helped me connect with my ancestry and community in new ways. There is always laughter; there is always generosity and there is always kindness from the teachers and peers. We are all learning and visiting together in a way that makes learning language fun! .”

“As a Cree language and culture teacher, I am always looking for new ways to make Cree learning more accessible, fun and more compatibility with our youth growing needs. This Cree group meeting that the was put together .has given me the opportunity to get an idea of what works and what doesn't work as far as helping new learners become more fluent in our language. With the fluent speakers leading the smaller groups and coming together to discuss what was learned it provides instant feedback and room for growth where it is needed. Our youth grow with technology and we as educators and language keepers we need to be able to grow with our students' vast skills and interests to keep our languages strong this program offers valuable teachings which are beneficial not only in the adult community but is another way to teach language to our youth. Learning Cree as a group also teaches our youth the values of community and helping each other to maintain our identity as nîhithawak”
